What's Actually in Our Tattoo Balm (And Why It's There)

We built Hold Fast Tattoo Balm because we wanted something that actually supported the skin through that process - not just something that ticked a box. Every ingredient in it is there for a reason. Here's what's inside and what it's doing for your tattoo.
Sunflower Seed Oil (Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil)
Sunflower oil is one of those ingredients that punches well above its weight. It's naturally high in linoleic acid, which helps reinforce the skin's barrier - important when you consider that a fresh tattoo is essentially thousands of tiny punctures that your skin is working hard to repair.
It keeps the skin hydrated without feeling heavy or greasy, reduces the dryness and flaking that can happen mid-heal, and absorbs easily enough that it won't suffocate the skin. Simple, effective, and genuinely well-suited for the job.
Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride
Derived from coconut oil and glycerin, this one is a workhorse in quality skincare for a reason. It gives the balm a silky, lightweight feel and helps it spread evenly over sensitive, freshly tattooed skin.
The practical benefit: it keeps skin conditioned and hydrated without the heaviness that can trap moisture and slow healing down. It's the kind of ingredient that does a lot without drawing attention to itself.
Beeswax (Cera Alba)
Beeswax has been used in skincare for centuries, and it earns its place in our balm. It creates a breathable protective layer over healing skin - shielding it from friction, environmental irritation, and moisture loss - without sealing it off completely.
That balance matters. Unlike petroleum-based alternatives, beeswax lets the skin do what it needs to do while keeping it protected while it heals.
Castor Oil (Ricinus Communis Seed Oil)
Castor oil is rich in ricinoleic acid, which makes it a solid conditioning ingredient for dry or stressed skin. It adds some depth to the balm's hydration, helps soften skin texture during healing, and contributes a natural sheen that makes healed tattoos look more defined.
Hydrated skin reflects light better. That's not marketing - it's just how skin works, and it makes a real difference to how your tattoo looks once it's settled.
Candelilla Wax (Euphorbia Cerifera Wax)
This is a plant-based wax that works alongside the beeswax to give the balm its structure and help it stay effective on the skin. It supports moisture retention, keeps the texture smooth on application, and helps the balm hold its form without going soft or greasy.
It's one of those ingredients that makes the formulation work as a whole rather than having a single dramatic effect - but without it, the balm wouldn't hold together the way it does.
Squalane
Squalane is one of the most skin-compatible ingredients in modern skincare because it closely mirrors the skin's own natural oils. It absorbs quickly, hydrates deeply, and doesn't clog pores.
For tattooed skin specifically, it helps restore some of the balance that the tattooing process disrupts - supporting elasticity and barrier recovery in a way that heavier oils can't quite match. It's become a staple in our formulation for good reason.
Dimethicone
Dimethicone is used widely in dermatological products because it forms a smooth, protective layer on the skin's surface that reduces moisture loss and helps buffer against friction and irritation.
For fresh tattoos, that friction protection matters - clothing rubbing against a healing tattoo is one of the more common sources of discomfort and irritation during recovery. Dimethicone helps create a more comfortable healing environment without interfering with the process.
Vitamin E (Tocopherol)
Vitamin E is a well-established antioxidant that supports skin repair and helps protect against environmental stress during healing. It keeps skin soft and elastic, and it's one of those ingredients that pulls double duty - helpful during the initial heal, and good for the long-term health of the skin around your tattoo.
Why Balance Matters More Than Intensity
A lot of aftercare products go heavy - thick balms, occlusive ointments, petroleum-based formulas that feel protective but can actually slow things down by trapping too much moisture against healing skin.
The approach we took with Hold Fast was to combine ingredients that each do a specific job: oils that nourish and soften, waxes that protect and seal, and skin-compatible actives that support barrier repair. Nothing in there is there for the label. It's a small ingredient list because we didn't want filler - we wanted every ingredient to carry its weight.
